Rediscovering Myself Through Wildlife Photography: A Journey of Healing

Updated: Aug 16

My Move to a Different Country

For 24 years, Turkey was my home, a place where every corner and street felt familiar. The bustling markets, the rich history, and the warm Mediterranean climate were all constants in my life. However, two years ago, I made a significant life change and moved to the Netherlands. While I was excited about the opportunities and new experiences, adapting to this new environment proved to be more challenging than I had anticipated.

Physical and Mental Challenges in a New Environment

The Netherlands, with its flat landscapes and temperate climate, was a stark contrast to the vibrant and varied terrain of Turkey. The weather, often overcast and rainy, began to take a toll on my mental health. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a well-documented phenomenon, and I soon found myself experiencing symptoms of it. According to the National Institute of Mental Health in the USA, the lack of sunlight can disrupt our internal clock, leading to feelings of depression and fatigue.

The lifestyle change was another hurdle. In Turkey, social gatherings and outdoor activities were a significant part of my routine. The more reserved lifestyle in the Netherlands made me feel isolated. Studies have shown that social isolation can lead to a host of mental health issues, including anxiety and depression (Cacioppo, Hughes, Waite, Hawkley, & Thisted, 2006).

Staying away from my hometown and the familiar comfort of family and friends only exacerbated these feelings. I often felt homesick and disconnected from the vibrant community I had left behind for the first couple of months.

Turning to Nature for Solace

In my search for comfort and a sense of belonging, I found myself drawn to nature. The Netherlands, despite its urban centers, boasts beautiful natural landscapes, from lush green parks to serene water bodies. Compared to Turkey, where urban life often overshadowed natural exploration, the Dutch environment offered more accessible and well-protected green spaces.

Although Turkey is home to a great variety of species, my lifestyle there never provided the opportunity to truly engage with wildlife. In contrast, the Netherlands' greener and more conservation-focused environment made it easier to encounter and appreciate wildlife. I began to spend more time outdoors, enjoying solitary walks and bike rides. This alone time in nature became a sanctuary for me.

I soon realized that these moments of solitude were more than just a way to pass the time; they were essential for my mental health. According to a study published in Frontiers in Psychology, spending time in nature can significantly reduce stress and improve mood (Bratman, Hamilton, & Daily, 2012). I found solace in the quiet beauty of my surroundings, and a new passion began to emerge – wildlife photography.

The Healing Power of Wildlife Photography

With a camera in hand, I started to document the flora and fauna I encountered on my excursions. Wildlife photography became a therapeutic outlet for me. Capturing the intricate details of a bird’s plumage or the delicate structure of a flower allowed me to focus on the present moment, pushing aside worries and anxieties.

Photography also helped me to relive and share these magnificent moments. By creating a visual record of my experiences, I could revisit those tranquil scenes whenever I felt overwhelmed. This practice is supported by research; a study in the Journal of Environmental Psychology found that viewing images of nature can elicit feelings of awe and reduce stress (Kaplan, 1995).

Videography added another layer to this experience. Recording the sounds of rustling leaves or a flowing stream provided an immersive escape, further enhancing my connection to nature. These activities fostered mindfulness, a state of active, open attention to the present, which has been shown to improve mental well-being (Brown & Ryan, 2003).

Stares from some of my favorite encounters

A Thrilling Encounter in Zuid-Kennemerland National Park

One of the most memorable experiences during my wildlife photography journey was an encounter with a European bison in Zuid-Kennemerland National Park. As I wandered through the park, I suddenly found myself face-to-face with this majestic creature. The sheer size and power of the bison were awe-inspiring, and for a moment, I felt incredibly small in comparison to the grandeur of nature.

This thrilling but outstanding experience taught me not only about the vastness of the natural world but also about the crucial role humans play in it. European bison, once on the brink of extinction, have made a comeback thanks to dedicated conservation efforts. This encounter underscored the importance of our actions in preserving these magnificent animals and their habitats. It reminded me that while we may feel insignificant in the grand scheme of things, our efforts in conservation and environmental protection are vital.

A New Chapter: Improved Health and a Renewed Purpose

Two years into my journey, I am in a much better place, both physically and mentally. My regular excursions into nature and the creative process of photography have significantly improved my overall well-being. I feel more energetic, positive, and responsive to the world around me.

This newfound passion has also opened up a world of possibilities. I am always on the lookout for new quests and challenges, eager to discover and learn more about the natural world. Moreover, I have found a sense of purpose in sharing my experiences and helping others. By showcasing the beauty of nature through my photographs and videos, I hope to inspire others to appreciate and protect our environment.

Conclusion

Moving to a new country and adapting to a different lifestyle was a challenging experience that took a toll on my mental and physical health. However, turning to nature and embracing wildlife photography has been a transformative journey. The act of capturing and reliving the beauty of the natural world has not only improved my well-being but also ignited a passion for discovery and conservation. Today, I am healthier, more resilient, and driven by a purpose to explore and protect the wonders of nature.

Her insanın doğaya , canlıya saygı duyduğunu umudediyorum. Enerjin daim olsun. Seninle guru duyuyorum annnnemmmm🥰
