Seals, How They Are Like Dogs

Seals possess a playful and curious nature, much like dogs, making them endearing and relatable to us. Their ability to seamlessly transition between the sea and sandy shores showcases their adaptability and charm. Research shows that seals have complex social behaviors and strong bonds within their groups. Through my photography, I capture their playful antics and serene moments, highlighting their unique personalities and the joy they bring to those who observe them.

PROTECT

Extinction Status of Seals

Seals face various threats, including habitat loss, pollution, and climate change, which impact their populations. Species such as the Mediterranean monk seal are critically endangered, with fewer than 700 individuals remaining. Conservation efforts are crucial to ensure their survival and the health of marine ecosystems. Through my photography, I aim to raise awareness about the plight of seals and the urgent need for protective measures to safeguard their future.

The three siblings I filmed in South Holland, late 2023. Very cute and friendly, but at the same time cautious.

I realized, these puppies were acting very polite and cute, as well as being so curious about their surroundings. Jumping into the see to get fresh, and sleeping on the sand to get some rest, thats how the majority of the day passed for them.

My Seal Story

Even though it was my first experience, it was the most special one.

One of my most cherished experiences involves photographing seals for two sisters who lost their sibling to cancer. They believed that whoever passed away first would come back as a seal, and my photographs helped them feel closer to their lost sister. This poignant story underscores the emotional connection we can have with wildlife and the comfort it can bring during times of loss. Seals, with their expressive eyes and gentle nature, often evoke a sense of peace and continuity.

Seals have large, expressive eyes adapted for low-light vision, enabling them to see well underwater. Their eyes also have a high number of rod cells, enhancing their ability to detect movement and navigate in dim environments.

Seals use their powerful, flipper-like fins for efficient swimming and agile maneuvering in the water. Their front fins are strong and muscular, aiding in propulsion, while their rear fins help with steering and stability. If you are lucky they can also wave with them :)

Good setup is for animals, not you as a photographer

Filming seals requires specific equipment and techniques to ensure high-quality footage while minimizing disturbance to the animals. A good telephoto lens (400mm or higher) allows you to capture close-up shots from a distance, reducing stress on the seals. Using a tripod helps stabilize your camera, especially when filming in windy coastal conditions. It’s also beneficial to use a camera with a fast autofocus system and a high frame rate to capture dynamic behaviors, such as swimming or interactions between seals.

Where and When to Find Them

The Netherlands offers numerous opportunities to observe seals, particularly along its coastal regions and sandbanks. Locations such as the Wadden Sea are prime spots for seal watching, especially during low tide when they come ashore. The best times to see seals are during the breeding season in summer and the molting period in late spring. My photographs guide enthusiasts to these locations, offering insights on the best times and conditions to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
